Using
games to teach hockey is now becoming the thing in the USA and we have
been teaching it for years. We have developed these documents for coaches
to develop player skills. Each document contains a specific player role
and defines games to use in practice to develop the player's skills in
that role.
But before
you begin players must be able to skate! Included in these documents is
a number of skating games to use prior to teaching each of the 4 player
roles. We hope that you find these games a benefit to your team and that
you players develop critical skills to play and enjoy the game of hockey:
"The Fastest Team Sport In The World."

INTRODUCTION
When
the Four Player Roles are understood by coaches and by players, the game
becomes easy to teach and to learn. Once the needs of players or teams
are determined, games and modified scrimmages that emphasize the players'
roles become quite easy to invent and to implement. Good habits are reinforced
naturally in game-like settings; the game becomes easy to play correctly.
Skill is a natural by-product. Be Creative.
THE
FOUR PLAYER ROLES
Both in offensive and defensive games, the moves of the players are determined
by what role they are playing. The roles are determined by their closeness
to the puck and whether they are on defense, offense or in transition.
During any of these situations each player will be fulfilling one of the
four playing roles.
