SHORT
BENCH
A team is considered
to have a short bench for two reasons.
- They are short
players due to suspensions or absences
- The coach begins
to use only his best players in a critical
game situation or is benching players
for some reason.
CLEAR
THE PUCK
When a player shoots
the puck out of his end zone and the puck
crosses his own blue line, it is considered
"Clearing the puck".
GETTING
CHOPPED
This could mean
two things. One, to get hit with a stick
on the pads or directly on an unprotected
area. Two, could mean a player has been
cut or chopped from a team's roster (tryout
teams only).
GETTING
CUT FROM THE TEAM
A player has been
cut from a team's roster (tryout teams only)
and cannot play with that team. This is
usually done at the beginning of the season
as the teams reduce their players down to
a workable number of the best.
ICE
SNAKE
A euphemism for
the tripping action of a player when no-one
is near and apparently trips on something
- an ice snake. The trip is usually caused
by a pile of snow on the ice or the player
not lifting his skates high enough and causes
them to drag and trip the player.
TRIP
OVER THE BLUE LINE
Same as Ice Snake
but generally occurs over or near the blue
line. Sometimes is occurs at the red line
but can occur anywhere - even on the bench,
especially when entering the ice from the
bench when everyone is watching!
SNOW
THE GOALIE
The action of a
forward approaching the opposing goalie
at a high rate of speed and stopping just
short of the goalie causing a spray of snow
from the stopping action. This usually occurs
when the goalie is lying on the ice after
making a save and causes the goalie much
frustration. It puts them off their game.
GARBAGE
GOAL
A goal scored very
easily or simply by fluke. This type of
goal usually does not require any special
action on the part of the goal scorer. Examples
- standing in front of the net and the puck
ricochets off your rear end or skate or
stick without the goal scorer doing anything,
or the other team puts the puck in for you.
GOAL
SUCK or CHERRY PICKING
A player who stays
on side but outside the blue line when his
team is in their own end zone. This player
is usually looking for a long pass for a
breakaway on the opposition. Some players
are lazy, don't back-check and want to score
easier goals from a breakaway.
NERVOUS
PEE
Human nature has
a means of making one's body ready for critical
situations. When a player is preparing for
a game to start he or she may experience
the urge to urinate. This is a normal occurrence
and is commonly known as needing a NERVOUS
PEE.
BANANA
TURNS
A skating turn that appears like a banana
when you look at the mark left on the ice.
THE
WALL
The Wall is considered to be the boards.
When you get hit into the boards, you hit
the wall. When you run out of ice you usually
hit the wall or the boards.
RUNNING
OUT OF REAL ESTATE
This occurs when you are skated into the
corner of the opposition's end and lose
the puck because they have cornered you
and you have no place to go but into the
boards. You have run out of room to maneuver
and therefore run out of real estate.
DEKE
A fake hockey move that lets the defending
player think your going one way and then
you go the other way.
SPIN-A-RAMA
A move started by Serge Savard of the Montreal
Canadiens and coined by Danny Galivan the
announcer, where the player with the puck
is standing still and spins in a full circle
to fake the opposing player.
TIC-TAC-TOE
A three way passing play, usually in the
opposition's end, ending in a goal.
POND
HOCKEY
Hockey played on (a frozen, of course!)
pond. Sometimes it refers to hockey played
outdoors, too.
SHINNEY
A game of hockey played without referees
and ruled by respect. Also know as "Pick
Up Hockey"
STREET
HOCKEY
Hockey played on the streed, duh! This game
is finding itself under scrutiny by local
By-Law Enforcement Officers and has been
banned in a few communities. It is also
know as street hockey. See Road
Hockey Banned
BREAKAWAY
A player in full control of the puck and
having no opposing player between himself
and the opposing goaltender.
OFF-ICE
OFFICIALS
Official Scorer, Game Timekeeper, Penalty
Timekeeper, and two Goal Judges.
SHORTHANDED
A team is below the numerical strength of
its opponent on the ice.
SPEARING
Poking or attempting to poke an opponent
with the toe of the blade of the stick.
GIVE
AWAY
This is not a free drink or coupon but a
free puck given to the opposition by accident
(of course). A player does not give the
puck to the opposition in a game on purpose.
But when a long pass is intercepted, when
a player passes blindly to another team
mate and that team mate is not there but
intercepted by the opposition then its considered
a give away.
BLIND
PASS
Passing the puck to your teammate without
looking, expecting him or her to be there
but they are not. Oops. This may lead to
a give-away or by luck another of your team
mates picks up the puck. Generally blind
passes should not be executed - at lease
in your own end!
RIM
IT
The action of shooting the puck around the
end boards to get it to the other side by
shooting forward. Shooting it around the
rim of the boards or the round ends to clear
the puck or to pass to your team mate breaking
down the opposite side or to your point
man (or woman)
BUBBLE
KIDS
This term describes those kids during the
evaluation process, generally, that fall
between one level and another level. They
could play in either group at the time,
however they need to be further evaluated
to determine their best position for playing
that suits their skills.
STICK
SANDWICH
This is an infraction. When a player gives
another player a stick in the head area
it's called a stick sandwich. Also when
three players collide they usually use their
stick to protect themselves and the one
in the middle gets both sticks hitting him
or her.
